How to Achieve an Altered State of Consciousness

There are a few people who spontaneously experience an Altered State of Consciousness. Sometimes an accident can shock the mind into this type of extraordinary experience. Some people have tried stimulant substances or Devices that pacify the Nervous System and Altered State arises. However, we recommend avoiding the artificial methods, instead aim to develop skills that prepare the mind for a more controlled and natural Experience of Altered Consciousness.

Here are a few traditional Techniques that prepare the mind for the Experience of Altered States.

  • Learning to Relax Deeply and Quickly.

    • Develop an ability to Deeply Concentrate.

Our Device helps to Develop skills for Natural States of Altered Consciousness

Noumic Device is not a Quick Fix to the difficult Process of Learning Skills for Altered State Consciousness. It does not make people Deeply Relaxed or artificially put them in a Deep Meditation State. It simply shows how Nervous System is responding as people are learning the skills of Deep Relaxation, Meditation, or Working with The Subtle Energise of the Body. It shows, moment by moment, if a Technique is working well; if generally there is more Relaxation, if the Balance of Tension and Relaxation calms down, and if this balance becomes still and unchanging.

Psychology research discovered long ago that, there is a changing balance in the general level activity of the nervous system and brain. The general level of activity is either increasing, we call it energising; or decreasing, we call this relaxation. This balance of increase and decrease is happening all the time.

  • Amazingly, psychology research also discovered that, the changing balance of nervous system activity is reflected in a changing level of electro-conductivity of the human skin. This phenomena is called the EDA response, Electro-dermal Activity Response.
    Summarising the EDA response:-

    • Skin conductivity increases as the nervous systems energise, or become more tense.
    • Skin conductivity reduces as the nervous systems relax.

  • Noumic Device is a highly sensitive EDA skin conductivity monitor. During an Exercise for Developing Altered State Consciousness it can provide instantaneous, moment by moment, information that helps you assess how your Nervous System is responding.

Extraordinary Response when People Achieve Altered States of Consciousness

Generally, as people Relax or Meditate, the changing balance of tension and relaxation in their nervous system slows down, and the changes become smaller, however, they never stop completely!

Psychology Research discovered that, when people Experience Altered States of Consciousness the balance of tension and relaxation in their nervous system behaves in an extraordinary way; it completely stops changing.

The graph shows the electro-dermal resistance (the inverse of Skin Conductivity) as he did a Meditation Exercise. In affect it shows his changing balance of tension and relaxation.

The Meditation Expert was asked to aim for an Altered State of Consciousness, a supremely blissful state. He reported achieving this, lasting for approximately half a minute. The data shows an extraordinary 'levelling off,' where skin conductivity completely stopped changing.

This confirms the findings of Psychology Research. When people become super-relaxed, and experience Special / Altered States of Consciousness, their balance of tension and relaxation completely stops changing.

The Noumic Device's White Light or Level Tone Sound indicates when these Special States occur.

How the Noumic Device Outputs Information

During Altered State Mind Practice, such as Deep Relaxation or Meditation, the Noumic Device out-puts information either by coloured light signals, or by sound signals.

  • Light Mode: Each moment during a Relaxation or Meditation Exercise one of three LED lights illuminates.
  • Sound Mode: Every 2 seconds during a Relaxation or Meditation Exercise one of three sounds is made.

To develop Deep Mind States, Control of the Mind must be Practiced

  • Altered State of Consciousness Electronic Device in the palm of the hand. Hand-held gadget that indicates the affect of Altered States Practice on the body. To Practice Mind Control Skills we must stop everyday thoughts and analytical processes, we must stop thinking about the physical world around us, and move attention away from the body-senses.

  • Using the body-senses, in a limited way, is a method for training the mind in concentration. For example, a fundamental Mind Training Exercise is being aware of the breath. This uses a single aspect of one bodily-sense; however, the general use of the senses during Mind Concentration Practice is avoided.

  • Having to look or listen to a sense stimulating device would be counter-productive to the process of developing Deep Mind States. With our Noumic Device, you don't need to use your body-senses too much in order to take in the information it gives.

    • There are no dials or displays to fix your eyes on, you do not have to listen in a complex way.

    • In light-mode, there are just 4 coloured lights to see. Just gaze in the general direction of the Lights you will notice the Colour changes. In sound-mode, there are just 4 different basic sounds.

    • After using the device for a short while, you begin to know instinctively what its out-put signals mean, and you don't have to think about or analyse its information out-put too much.

Noumic Devices can be used in almost any position while practicing skills for developing Altered States of Consciousness

Noumic Device also indicates 'Levels' Achieved

If, during practice toward Developing Altered Mind States, you manage to relax well and consistently for a few minutes, the Noumic Device begins to indicate some extra information. It indicates each time a new Level in Deep Relaxation is achieved.

The Device calculates 'success in relaxation' by adding or deducting points to its internal memory depending upon the changes it detects in the balance of tension and relaxation of the Nervous System.

  • Points are added for increases in relaxation.
  • Points are deducted for decreases in relaxation.
  • Double points are added if there is no change in relaxation.

By indicating 'levels achieved' the Noumic Device is, in affect, a self-challenge Relaxation Game Device. The Levels Achieved function gives some sort of guide to successful and improving Mind and Body Control Skills, it allows people to compare one Practice Session with another.

Young people and those new to Relaxation and Meditation, may benefit by having this encouragement when practicing self control skills of 'sitting still,' and relaxing the Mind for more than just a minute or two. Suggestions for Techniques that Develop Altered Mind States

A separate web-page would be needed to fully explain each Technique for developing Altered States of Consciousness. However, beginners and experts may have found this Altered States Web-page and wonder which Technique to try and how our Device will help. Here, briefly described, are two well-known Techniques; and, we explain what to expect form our Device as you Practice, and how this helps.

Breath Awareness Exercise

  • Bring your attention to the sensation of the Breath at some point in your body. For example, feeling the sensation of the air as in enters and leaves the nostrils.
  • Breath naturally, perhaps a little deeper and slower, but allow your breathing to flow naturally.
  • During the Practice Session try to keep your attention on the breath sensation.
  • Normally, your mind wants to wander, but, this practice helps you develop the skill of bringing the mind under control.

Now, if you were doing this Exercise while holding the Device, how would it help?

  • Firstly, remember the exercise is to focus on the Breath not the Device.
  • The Device will show how your Nervous System responds during the exercise.
  • Hopefully, you will see a distinct calming of the Nervous System.
  • Hopefully, seeing this 'evidence' from the Device will prove that the exercise does affect on your Mind and Body.
  • For beginners, this proof may stimulate them to practice again and again.
  • With experience your Concentration improves, and so does your Nervous System's calmness.

This seems like a Simple Exercise, but it is really a good one to try for developing Concentration and Mind Focus. It is an exercise worth trying again and again until you master it. With our Device you may be inspired to keep practicing, you may learn, perhaps for the first time, just how profoundly the nervous system responds to the exercise.

Rhythmic Breathing Exercise Enhances Potential For Experiencing Altered Mind States

As well as Developing Mind Concentration Skills, this Technique has beneficial affects on 'subtle' Energy Systems of the Body. It energises the Nervous System with an 'esoteric' energy known as 'Prana', or 'Chi', or 'Vital Force'. Absorbing more of this Subtle Energy, distributing and storing it in the Nervous System, is a Practice that helps the development of New Mind Experience such as Profound Altered States of Consciousness.

  • Normally we breath in a 'less-than-ideal' way, perhaps erratically, perhaps too shallowly.
  • Our breathing becomes habitual. Re-training our Breathing Technique benefits our general health as well as absorbs more Subtle Energy.
    • When we get anxious or tense our Breathing changes.
    • Now, if you control your breathing better it can have the affect of removing this anxiety and tension.
  • Practicing Rhythmic Controlled Breathing balances the Nervous system, as well as develops concentration skills.

Here is the exercise:-

  • Breath in and breath out rhythmically. This means that, the length of time of the in-breath and out-breath should be equal.
  • For example, as you breath in count 4, and as you breath out count 4.
  • Some recommend after your in-breath count 2 as you hold your breath, then breath out.
  • See what feels comfortable for you.

We recommend this Breathing Exercise. If you do it while holding a Noumic Device, what would you expect?

  • Because each person is different, this is an unknown factor.
  • Will this Rhythmic Breathing Exercise Energise the Nervous System or Relax it?
    • This exercise may relax the body and mind, because this type of breathing has the affect of expelling stress from the body.
    • This exercise may energise the body and mind, because it absorbs extra Subtle Energy (Prana, Chi, Vital Force).
  • With the Device you will see how the Rhythmic Breathing Technique affects you.
  • You should see some profound changes to your balance of tension and relaxation.
